The Joy in Suffering

Suffering is hard. For some, it’s more difficult than others. However, we can have confidence that we worship a God who suffers alongside us.
What 1 Peter says is that we should always remind ourselves: “Therefore let those who suffer according to God’s will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good” – 1 Peter 4:19.

The goal on this earth is not to live a stress-free life but to look to Christ in all circumstances. To have confidence in our suffering, we must first know the Suffering Savior. Jesus was flogged and nailed to a cross. Few people ever know live even what that feels like. Of those who were crucified, only one did it for others while being completely innocent.  Just pondering on the fact that God entered this world and suffered that kind of death would change your life. Nothing else compares. That doesn’t mean the pain and tears that we feel in this life don’t matter, because they do. However, we now can lay them at the feet of Jesus, who also lived in this world and understands you. You are not alone in your pain.
What separates Christianity from every other religion is the concept of salvation. No other “God” came to earth, humbling himself as a servant, died, and resurrected for the sins of humanity. The concept that God could suffer like us is unheard of in other faiths.

Our suffering should be viewed in a positive light. We should live our lives out in joy, knowing that our suffering can be a praise to God. All the early Christians were willing to be put in prison and even put to death because of their faith in Jesus. They would do it over again if it meant Jesus would be praised even more.
The bad things in our lives aren’t fun, and they shouldn’t be viewed like that. Like Paul says in Romans 8:18 – “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” When we are reminded that Christ lives in us, we can also change the way we view the painful and dark things of this world. What once was the end of the road, a dark alleyway with no light, is now transformed into a way to glorify God and look forward to the glory that is ahead. This earth is temporary. Your pain is temporary. Those in Christ will be with Him for eternity in a place of 0 suffering.

It hurts now. I know it does.

But look to the One who knows you better than yourself. He has been through this life and understands. Nothing in this world, no other religion, job, person, or anything can give you peace in the darkness the way Jesus can. Your best moments with Him may be what looks like your lowest moments on this side of Heaven. Keep looking to Jesus.
“And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”
1 Peter 5:10
